The problem with MoM hip prosthesesĬontinuous motion of a MoM hip prosthesis causes wear of the acetabular-femoral head junction, resulting in the release of metal microparticles. However, excess release of metal debris from some MoM hip implants has proven to be a serious problem. MoM hip prostheses are thought to exhibit increased toughness, decreased wear, and a lower susceptibility to dislocation compared to other types of hip prostheses. In MoM hip resurfacing, the patient’s femur is preserved and capped with a metal component. In MoM total hip replacement, the patient’s femoral head is removed and replaced with a stemmed femoral component. Two types of hip replacements can be performed with these prostheses. MoM implants are composed predominantly of cobalt and chromium. While each implant type has its own pros and cons, it remains unclear which is the most successful. These implants are classified according to their composition as metal (ball) on plastic (socket), ceramic-on-ceramic, or metal-on-metal (MoM). Hip function can be restored through hip replacement, in which the diseased ball and socket are replaced with synthetic components. Several conditions, such as osteoarthritis, trauma, dysplasia, and osteonecrosis, can impair the function of the hip joint, resulting in loss of motion and pain. In simplistic terms, the hip can be thought of as a ball and socket joint, in which the femoral head (the ball) rotates within the acetabulum (the socket). The purpose of this Mini Review is to describe the adverse biological consequences of metal release from hip prostheses, provide an overview of the clinical utility of cobalt and chromium measurement and the current recommendations for testing, and alert laboratorians and physicians to the many challenges associated with measuring these metal ions. Consequently, measurement of cobalt and chromium concentrations may be useful in the assessment of implant function and the potential for adverse effects in the follow-up of patients with MoM hip prostheses. MoM hip prostheses are comprised predominantly of cobalt and chromium, and the serum concentration of these metal ions has been shown to correlate with both implant wear and the accumulation of metal debris in the periprosthetic tissue. While most MoM hip replacements are successful, some patients suffer from serious adverse effects secondary to the release of metal debris due to implant wear and corrosion. Roughly one million metal-on-metal (MoM) hip prostheses have been implanted worldwide in order to ameliorate these issues. Individuals with advanced hip disease suffer from pain, impaired hip function, and decreased quality of life.

The practice of bowing is something which doesn’t come naturally to the ego-centric Western mentality, which sees bowing as a foreign and submissive act. While we’ve received many great gifts from the practice of Zen in the Western world, the practice of gassho and gassho rei (which is gassho with a small bow added in) wasn’t and likely won’t ever be one of them. How to use Gassho to bring balance and meaning to your daily life It serves then as an opportunity for more deeply connecting with the world around you, thereby nourishing you in the process. An affirmation of your commitment to respect and care for the world around you in the same way that you would care for yourself. The Zen practice of gassho is, in a way, an affirmation. Wherever you go, and whatever you do, you gassho. When you arrive in front of your zafu (a Zen meditation pillow) for meditation, you bow. When you enter the lecture hall, you bow. When you enter the Zendo (a Zen meditation hall within a Zen center or monastery), you bow. The practice is a constant declaration of reverence for the world as a whole. In Zen, practitioners bow to everything, everyone, and for almost every occasion. Respect and reverence for life is a core principle of Zen practice and something which is symbolized in the act of gassho. Isn’t that an easy gift to give someone?” Then we straighten up, look at the eyes of the other person, and smile. We say silently, “A lotus for you,” as we breathe in and, “A Buddha to be!” as we breathe out and bow from our waist. Then we look at the eyes of the person we will bow to and we smile. We bring our palms together carefully to form a beautiful lotus flower at the level of our heart. It’s a way of recognizing and honoring the Buddha or the awakened nature in each of us. A bow may mean hello, thank you, good-bye, or excuse me. “ Bowing is a deep form of communication. The great Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh said this of the significance of the practice: In this way, gassho in Zen is a powerful practice which allows the practitioner to deeply touch their own spirit and that of the world around them. Whereas gassho in its traditional sense was an act of greeting, apology, or reverence for another, gassho in Zen is about showing respect and reverence for life and serves as an act of humility where one can practice letting of the ego. However, the practice took on a different significance once Zen began spreading throughout Japan in the 8th century CE. Zen didn’t invent the gesture, as the hands-together bow is used throughout Asia in countries such as China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and India. How Does Gassho Relate to Zen and Buddhism? Gassho, a ritual gesture where the practitioner presses one’s hands together in front of their chest as a sign of greeting or reverence (resembling praying and similar to the Indian practice of namaste), is a gesture with great significance in Zen practice. One of the more subtle gifts was the Zen practice of gassho, a part of a broadly Asian tradition of bowing, but distinct in its own right when practiced in the spirit of Zen. Suzuki’s An Introduction to Zen Buddhism). Zen quickly took foot in Japan, and over the next thousand years it would have such a significant impact on Japanese culture that aspects of its culture would become indecipherable from Zen in much the same way as Hinduism is rooted in Indian culture (or, rather, is in many ways Indian culture) today.įrom art to philosophy, style, and the origins of the Japanese tea ceremony, Zen made an indelible mark on Japan that can still be witnessed today, albeit less significantly (for more information on Zen’s impact on Japanese culture, read D.T. The practice, which was said to be founded by Bodhidharma, a red-haired Buddhist monk traveling from India in the lineage of the original Buddha–more than 2,000 years ago in China, brought many valuable gifts then as well. However, there was a time when Zen first arrived on the shores of Japan in much the same way. Since then, we’ve received several amazing gifts from the practice and tradition of Zen and many have taken quickly to this beautiful practice including, most notably, the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Suzuki and Shunryu Suzuki (no relation), author of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind. In the decades following that fateful trip, we would have the pleasure of welcoming several great Zen masters from Japan, including D.T. It was then that Rinzai Zen master Soyen Shaku, who is recognized as the first Zen Buddhist priest to come to the United States, was invited to and participated in the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago. In 1893, the Western world received the incredible teaching of Zen. Precalculus also examines exponential and logarithmic functions, as well as the use of polynomials in functions and the effects exponents, logarithms, and polynomials each have on a function’s graph. Precalculus covers the solving and graphing of functions, paying particular attention to the properties of functions, including domain, range, maxima, and minima, in order to teach students how to discuss and describe different aspects and properties of functions, which will come in very handy in Calculus courses. Precalculus builds upon concepts of functions and graphs that should be familiar to students from Algebra I and Algebra II courses. By ensuring that you have a good grasp of the foundational concepts of Calculus introduced in Precalculus, you can set yourself up for succeeding in later Calculus courses and other advanced math classes. Whether you need top Pre-Calculus tutors in Albany, Pre-Calculus tutors in Milwaukee, or top Pre-Calculus tutors in Albuquerque, working with a pro may take your studies to the next level. Precalculus is thus highly recommended and often an enforced prerequisite for taking Calculus classes. Due to the quick pace at which many Calculus courses are forced to move, many do not spend much time on teaching or reviewing basic concepts this makes the class much more difficult for students who have not encountered basic Calculus concepts in Precalculus classes. Precalculus courses are designed to introduce students to concepts integral to understanding Calculus, giving them a solid foundation on which to base the more complex ideas introduced in Calculus classes. I still prefer the iPad app more, but if you are in a pinch, the Kindle for Mac app is a good substitute. The app does just what you need it to do read ebooks. You’ll have access to over 1,000,000 books in the Kindle Store, including best sellers and new releases. Overall, the Kindle for Mac app gets 3/4 stars from me. Use the Kindle app to start reading from your PC or Mac. The other thing that I do not like is that when you open the app and it has one of those open windows where it shows you the percentage of how close it is to opening the app. The issue is consistent in the iPad and iPhone versions of the Kindle app too. I could be on page 37 of my book and it would say I have 6,000+ pages to go. However, the one thing that I hated about the app is that the page number or page count was inaccurate for both books that I read. It makes you feel like you are reading a real book. I also like that in the settings, you can make it so that the pages make a flip animation whenever you turn them. With the Mac getting bigger on Dark Mode, it’s good to see that Amazon is adequately updating its app to accommodate for that. This problem is occurring on Intel and M1 processors. With that said, when I came across the Kindle for Mac app in the Mac App Store, it was something that I had to immediately download.Īfter using the app for a couple of weeks, the first thing that I do like about it is that it has a Dark Mode to it. If you had the Amazon Kindle app for Mac installed on your MAC and upgraded to Big Sur, many users are reporting that it no longer works. I carry my MacBook Pro and iPhone charger in there, as well as my Apple Watch charger, so there is not much room when it is all said and done and everything is packed. The reason for this is that it simply clogs my laptop bag too much. Still, there were some days where I did not want to have to bring my iPad fifth generation to work. A couple weeks later, I got an internship at a local station in my hometown, which would allow me the time on my breaks to be able to read my new ebooks. I downloaded that version, logged into my amazon account, and was able to. It installs an older version of kindle for mac/pc that does not have the new amazon encryption. Apple Books offers a wide catalog of free and paid books from both famous and lesser-known writers, and you can browse based on genres, price tags, and more. For Christmas last year, my brother bought me a couple books from the Amazon Kindle store. I moved both hands forward to grip the opposite edge of the desk but stayed up on my elbows. I thought my legs might collapse from the tease before he decisively pushed into me.“Oooh, yeah, oooh God, yes.”Carl withdrew part way and drove into me again. I expected a good sharp slap on my ass in fact, I wanted a spank but I remained silent.Wasting no time Carl lined up and wiggled the head up and down along my abused opening five or six times. If you're sure you want company, I'd love to go.''Wonderful! Is nine to early? I tend to get up early even on vacation. I've never been to this part of Florida before and I hear the surrounding towns have some interesting antique shops.''Oh, I don't want to intrude! But I will admit to loving antique shops. You were saying?''I was asking you if you'd like to go sight-seeing tomorrow. Brain just went blank for a minute there. I must have gotten quiet because after a few minutes, Allan asked if I was OK.'Sure I am. Alan reached over at one point and took my hand and I felt a tingle - I hadn't 'tingled' in so long it took me a minute to realize that I was feeling a sexual attraction! What an eye opener that was. Talked, no.Pretty soon, we ordered, ate and while sitting over coffee, realized that we had so much in common that we felt totally comfortable with each other. When light is reflected off this subtly uneven surface onto a wall, the design will reflect differently from the rest of the mirror to reveal its secret image.Of course, we hadn't talked in years - yelled, yes. Although it may seem that a magic mirror has been polished uniformly, there is actually minute unevenness invisible to the eye. The resulting thinner, raised non-image areas deflect light differently than the lower, thicker image areas. These differences are not easily visible to the naked eye. Then, in polishing, the thickness of the reflecting surface is typically buffed down to about 1 mm in thickness, but it can be buffed more deeply in the secret image areas because the metal there is thicker. The secret image areas are made to be thicker than the rest of the mirror. So how does a magic mirror work? The secret image is actually cast into the design on the back of the mirror's reflecting surface. Nor does it have any obvious irregularities on its reflecting surface. These mirrors with designs on the back became popular among commoners in the Edo period, and the motifs used in these designs became diversified.Ī Japanese magic mirror does not reflect the relief design cast on the back. Later, as the hand mirror (a round mirror with a rectangular protruding handle) came into use, designs became more pictorial, covering the entire back. In ancient times, round mirrors typically had a knob in the center of the back, through which a cord would be strung. Though the earliest mirrors were fashioned after Chinese mirrors, in time mirror makers began to depict Japanese style designs and motifs from the Japanese natural world. During the Heian period (794–1185), the mirror was included as part of the elaborate toiletry sets used by aristocrats. The technology needed to cast metal mirrors was introduced to Japan from China around the Yayoi period (ca. 3rd century BCE–3rd century CE). Mirrors are also admired as artistic objects, as they have intricate pictorial designs on their backs. Within Japanese culture, mirrors are one of the most potent symbols of power, revered as sacred objects representing the gods. Mirrors are usually considered primarily as implements for personal grooming but, in Japan, mirrors were used for far more than reflecting one's image. |
